Vaccine Clinic FAQs
-
Why should I have my pet vaccinated?
Having your cat or dog vaccinated helps prevent serious and potentially deadly diseases, such as rabies, distemper, and bordetella.
Additionally, it protects not only your pet's health, but the health of other animals they may interact with.
-
How can I book my pet's spot for the vaccination clinic?
To book a spot for your pet at our monthly vaccine clinic, please contact us. We will schedule you into the next available slot.
-
Do I need to be an existing client at Shane Veterinary Medical Center to take advantage of the clinic?
No, you do not need to be an existing client. All are welcome to attend our vaccine clinic.
-
What's included in the complimentary exam?
If your pet is a new patient at Shane Veterinary Medical Center, we're also offering a complimentary new patient exam during their visit at our vaccine clinic.
One of our vets will perform a thorough physical checkup for your cat or dog and assess the following to check for signs of illness or disease:
- General condition
- Coat and skin
- Face and head
- Internal health
Once the exam is complete, the vet will review any concerns they may have about your pet's overall health and address any questions you may have.
-
Do I need to bring anything to my pet's appointment?
If your pet is not currently a patient at our animal hospital, please bring their vaccination records with you to ensure we can administer the appropriate vaccines.
In addition, if you are a new client and would like us to perform a complimentary exam, please bring:
- Records of your pet's medical history and past and present medications and dosages
- Details of your pet's food, exercise routine, and bowel movements to help your vet understand your pet's lifestyle
- Your pet's favorite blanket or toy, to help them stay calm during their appointment
- Any questions or concerns you'd like to address with the vet
-
Do you accept walk-ins?
Yes. While we recommend contacting us to schedule your visit to this vaccine clinic to secure your pet's spot, we are happy to accept walk-ins on a first-come, first-serve basis.
-
What are common side effects of vaccines?
The most common side effects of vaccines in pets are lethargy, slight fever, localized swelling, and mild discomfort.
It's very rare for pets to experience severe side effects, such as facial swelling, vomiting, hives, itchiness, diarrhea, and breathing difficulties.
Symptoms of a serious reaction will generally occur very quickly after a vaccine is administered. However, they could take up to 48 hours to appear.
If this occurs, call us. Depending on your pet's circumstances, we may advise you to bring them in for emergency care.
-
Can I also have my pet microchipped during their appointment?
Yes. You can have your pet microchipped during their appointment for $50. The vet will register the chip number with the company that produces the chip.
Microchipping and registration can increase the chances that your pet will be found if they get lost.
If your pet is found and dropped off at a vet clinic or rescue organization with a microchip scanner, they will be able to contact you and reunite you with your cat or dog.
-
What are microchips and how do they work?
Microchips are a permanent form of identification. They are about the size of a grain of rice and can be placed under the skin.
Microchips are read using a special scanner, which most veterinarians and rescue shelters have. These scanners are universal and can read all identification numbers of all types of microchips.
When the scanner is passed over a cat or dog's body, the microchip transmits its identification number to the scanner.
The rescuer can then contact the national database, which in turn contacts the pet owner. A microchip can help reunite you with your pet if your four-legged companion is ever lost.
-
What's involved in the microchipping procedure?
The microchip implant process is minimally invasive. A veterinarian implants the chip with a needle, and no surgery is required.
The process involves little discomfort, and most cats and dogs do not have much of a reaction to it.
Microchipping & Registration for $50
Increase the chances that your cat or dog will be found if they are lost. Have your pet microchipped and registered for $50 during their appointment at our vaccination clinic.
